Greetings, Caterpillar Hunters!

imago

A crazy whole lot of people have been googling “pre imago” and hitting this blog in the last 24 hours. I only used the term in my March 20th post because the words “pupa” and “larva” bother me. (Read into that what you will.)

What gives? Was there a story on the news about a serial killer modeling himself after Thomas Harris novels? Is there a teacher somewhere assigning reports on butterflies? Has an unexpected infestation of cocoons caused the threat of monarch swarms? Oh, someone, please tell me!

(Incidentally, fellow bloggers, it’s true what they say about using more specific titles to attract traffic. But I ask, do you want to be hit on? Or do you want to be read?)

  1. Hi Ruth,
While seeing my stats rise has been a pleasant surprise over the last few weeks, I think I would rather a handful of dedicated readers rather than a hoard of hitters.
I have had the same problem with my blog. It was originally titled ‘Finding Passion For Life’ and when it was just that I kept getting google searches on ‘create passion in the bedroom’ when that is totally not what my blog is about. (must have dissapointed a few visitors! :P ) I have also had about 20 hits in the last two days from ‘qr.net/bnc4’ which is a shortlink to 10 myths about credit… Weird. Do you know how this happens?
Gotta say, your case is funnier.
    I hope all is well.

    Hey S,
From what I can tell, those hits from sites like the one you mention (qr.net/bnc4) are actually machines surfing to try and get us to click back at them. WordPress doesn’t weed out that type of activity. You can find other stat collectors that are a little more selective. Incidentally, my grandfather (Bob of Mary & Bob’s) would be so intrigued by the fact that we live in an age when we have to learn to decipher humans from machines, as well as prove ourselves organic (e.g., the “type the text you see here” pop quiz that comes up pretty regularly these days).

  2. Ruth,

I would rather be read for sure….that is if I were still blogging regularly. I have been “hit on” and gotten some really good comments and had some interesting conversations with people related to my pictures – mostly of my pics from Germany. I have given advice to expats and expat wives and even made a really great friend (embassy wife/knitter who moved to Baku while I was there) from being “hit on”. So while I’d rather be read, being “hit on” has its benefits too.

The title of my blog drives a lot of traffic too. I’m always amazed when I look at the stats and find that people really “google” to find out how to walk in stilettos! : )
